Description

The coming-of-age story of a precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl that begins during the Islamic Revolution. We meet nine-year-old Marjane when the fundamentalists first take power, forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. The story then follows her as she cleverly outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden, while living with the terror of government persecution and the Iran/Iraq war. Then Marjane's journey moves on to Austria where, as a teenager, her parents send her to school in fear for her safety and she has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape. Marjane eventually gains acceptance in Europe, but finds herself alone and horribly homesick, and returns to Iran to be with her family, though it means putting on the veil and living in a tyrannical society. After a difficult period of adjustment, she enters art school and marries, continuing to speak out against the hypocrisy she witnesses. At age twenty-four, she realizes that while she is deeply Iranian, she cannot live in Iran. She then makes the heartbreaking decision to leave her homeland for France, optimistic about her future, shaped indelibly by her past.

Watched this in my senior year of high school French and fell in love with it, still love watching it to this day. This would make a great live action movie as well.

This is actually a 5 star movie, 100%. It's one of my favorite adult animations of all time. This is a movie that I think every school aged child should have to watch at some point. Watching the characters grow up and change while the Iraq revolution rages in the background is a visceral, eye opening, and heartbreaking experience. Also watching these events play out through the eyes of a child and young adult drives the feeling of the movie home that much harder. This movie stands alone, and absolutely deserved all the Awards it earned. However, iTunes LIED and the English Language track is nowhere to be found. This is originally a French movie, but the studio created an English version that is packed with many, many, many talented English speaking voice actors. I myself don't mind watching movies that are subtitled, but unfortunately my husbands eyesight prevents him from reading said subtitles. So he is not able to fully enjoy this amazing movie. iTunes, you don't HAVE to have an English track with this movie, but it says right in the description that you do, so where is it? It not being there is pretty disappointing because it's basically false advertising on your part. At first I thought maybe the iPad was malfunctioning, but the English track is missing on my iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV. I'm sorry to say this but I want my $12.99 back or I want a copy of the movie that includes the English track like it says it does.

Amazing story of a girl growing up in war torn Iran. More powerful than sad, more inspirational than depressing. Although the ending is more bitter than sweet. Worth seeing for the animation alone. Subtitles are done well and are easy to follow.

Persepolis brings a story that people were afraid to tell. But Marjane Satrapi 's graceful bravery to talk about it in this flm is graceful. Just like her my uncles were from France if you like biopics see this movie. Iys a must see movie for foreign people.
