Description

One of the screen's grandest epics, this monumental story recounts the true-life experiences of T.E. Lawrence, better known to the world as Lawrence of Arabia. A young, idealistic British officer in WWI, Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) is assigned to the camp of Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness), an Arab tribal chieftain and leader in a revolt against the Turks. In a series of brilliant tactical maneuvers, Lawrence leads fifty of Feisal's men in a tortured three-week crossing of the Nefud Desert to attack the strategic Turkish-held port of Aqaba. And following his successful raids against Turkish troops and trains, Lawrence's triumphant leadership and unyielding courage gain him nearly god-like status among his Arab brothers.

Lawrence of Arabia is enjoyable and very scale. The reason Arabia is one of the greatest movies of all time it's because of it's brilliant filmmaking magic and beautiful acting performences by Alec Guinness. Most movies are slock and are hidden behind a green screen but Lawrence of Arabia is long, well shot and very epic in scale and the locations are beautiful.

This movie is very long and very involved,it is also an absolute classic ,not a quick watch by any means but you’ll find yourself drawn in a movie for a more mature audience ( like me), 5 stars all day long
  • Now appears to be director's cut

A reviewer late last year dinged the iTunes version as missing 6 minutes from the Director's Cut. I'm happy to report that the 4k version now available on iTunes clocks in at the 227 minute runtime that the reviewer said it should be. It also appears to be the correct 2.20:1 aspect ratio, unlike some iTunes "fullscreen/widescreen" zooms. I have not watched it yet, but the few minutes I checked out to confirm the technical details looked and sounded great, with the score filling the surround speakers in this 5.1 mix.

  • If you love this movie, get the Blu-ray

Lawrence of Arabia is my favorite movie of all time, and I have seen it many times over the years, including the 1989 70mm restoration on the silver screen of an old, palatial theater. While this movie is strong enough to rise above imperfect presentations, the file offered on iTunes is not optimal. Most noticeably, the intermission has been removed for some reason. Beyond that, the picture looks a bit fuzzy at times, and the colors seem off. If you love this movie like I do, you would be better served getting the Blu-ray release, which is gorgeous. If you just want to see the movie and aren't worried about imperfections, this is a decent value at the $4.99 sale price.

  • Best in 70mm Super Cinerama

I saw this masterpiece in Cinerama at Arclight in Hollywood..(has it really been 6 years ago?) Wow!, what a super “awesome” experience. I’m absolutely sure that 70mm is better than HD or even blue ray! Brighter, with better color rendition. I was checking out the trailer and comparing it to my Box Set Laserdisc of this film, and I'm afraid this version has been trimmed to fit modern TVs. "That is a Pity" as Lawrence would say, and of course the multi channel sound has been reduced to “stereo”. I would love to have this in my electronic collection, but I can’t bring myself to purchase a “modified to fit this screen” version. I hope Apple can convince the studio to allow it to transfer an unmolested version soon as I’m sure everyone wants a great electronic copy of this epic. Well, Apple put up a new trailer, so I bit the bullet and bought it but while the picture is pretty clear, the sides have been cut of by about 25% compared to my director approved Laserdisc so it may be "restored" but the studio has hacked it again. That's a pity. Well I hope Apple can get a truly restored version in the correct wide screen version.

Peter O'Toole was made for those epic films and this one of them. Superb acting, directing, plot...Fantastic!
  • Fantastic Film - Missing Intermission

A great film and awesome restoration - sadly the iTunes version lacks the intermission that is so necessary with a film like this.

Okay, maybe as a 12 year I was too easily impressed by the musical score, scope of the scenes, suspense of what was going to happen next and that superlative cast. All of this coupled with the cinematography and David Lean's direction only go to illustrate how complete an entertainment package this is. But the one aspect which puts this over the top is Peter O'Toole. So is there a score higher than 100 because he's certainly earned it. But no matter what O'Toole's score is, David Lean has earned a higher one for not just bringing all the various components together but for knowing the right time to allow his characters and /or the scenics with no dialogue to go "over the top" to keep us emotionally dialed into the movie. Not sure to buy it? TMC shows it regularly. Watching just the first 10-15 minutes should convince you.
