Description

BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of America’s most important artists, Wayne White. Raised in the mountains of Tennessee, Wayne White started his career as a cartoonist in New York City. He quickly found success as one of the creators of the TV show Pee-wee’s Playhouse, which led to more work designing some of the most arresting and iconic images in pop culture. Most recently, his word paintings, which feature pithy and often sarcastic text statements crafted onto vintage landscape paintings, have made him a darling of the fine art world. BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of a commercial artist struggling to find peace and balance between his work and his art. Acting as his own narrator, Wayne guides us through his life using moments from his latest creation: a hilarious, biographical one-man show. The pieces are drawn from performances at venues in Tennessee, New York and Los Angeles including the famous Roseland Ballroom and the Largo Theater. Whether he’s parading a twenty-foot-tall puppet through the Tennessee hillside, romping around the Hollywood Hills dressed in his LBJ puppet suit, relaxing in his studio pickin’ his banjo, or watching his children grow up much too soon, Wayne White always seems to have a youthful grin and a desperate drive to create art and objects. It is an infectious quality that will inspire everyone to find their pleasure in life and pursue it at all costs. At its core, BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING is a reminder that we should all follow our passion. It is those creative impulses that will lead us to where we need to go.

Wayne White appears to inhabit a different world than the less talented Everyman, and this film gives us a rare glimpse into that exuberant and awesome universe. Viewing this is far different than watching a documentary whose subject is no longer living--Wayne is alive and Wayne lives large. With gusto, he opens himself up with a refreshing lack of inhibition, drawing us into the interior life of a human being who doesn't just make art, but who lives and experiences art in every facet of his existence, and with every material he touches. So that's what talent looks like!

I saw this at it's debut in SxSW in Austin this spring and was captivated and entertained from the start. Finally a film about art and with a sense of humor, I was laughing throughout most of the film. I thought the director did a wonderful job of making the audience feel included in the wacky but beautiful journey… so much so that after the 90 minutes flew by, I had an uncontrollable urge to go do something artistic. Hot glue guns, cardboard and thrift stores never seems so enticing.

I simply LURVE this film. It is not only a love letter to the artist's family, but to art itself. Seeing the world through Wayne White's ironic and eff'd up brain is refreshing and inspiring. Neil Berkeley's filmmaking and storytelling is seamless as he provides some of the best archival footage of Pee Wee's Playhouse I've ever seen. He gives us a glimpse of not only the artist's brilliance, but the process. To be a fly on the wall in White's parent's house shows you EXACTLY where White's inspiration for Pee Wee's Playhouse came from. I laughed, I cried, I was inspired. Thank you!
