I agree with some of the reviews about slow-- but I liked it. Good gritty mood, and an absorbing storyline. Good acting. But.. the ending was the grim, nihilist sort that has become fairly typical in many thrillers. THEN in the credits I was reminded that this was a John LeCarre work... so there you have it. It's going to have the most negative, defeatist ending possible... all of his stuff ends the same way.
  • Foreshadows Chris Nolan Themes

I you liked “Inception”, “Memento” or “Insomnia” you will very likely like this as well. The film is like a concentrated dose of the core themes of the later films. As in “Inception”, the action jumps back and forth in time (not flashbacks, but parallel tracks, separated by time). This film is shot in a grainy, black & white way that recalls 1960’s noir thrillers, but the pacing and cross-cutting are modern. As another reviewer said, it is hard to believe the movie is only 70 minutes long - I was hooked in the first few minutes, and could not wait to see how the story developed. This is where it started for Nolan’s film-making - I cannot believe I waited so long to see it, but perhaps I appreciated it all the more for having seen the later, more polished works. BUY IT!
