Description

OSCAR ® Nominees Maggie Gyllenhaal (2009, Supporting Actress, "Crazy Heart") and Viola Davis (2011, Actress, "The Help") lead a stellar cast in writer-director Daniel Barnz’s inspirational drama inspired by actual events. Frustrated by her dyslexic daughter’s struggles at a failing inner-city school, Jamie Fitzpatrick (Gyllenhaal) tries to enroll her somewhere else. When this fails, Jamie recruits a disillusioned but caring teacher (Davis) to try to fix the broken school. Soon, the women find themselves in a tense battle against apathy, hopelessness, and powerful interests. OSCAR ® Winner Holly Hunter (1993, Actress, "The Piano") and OSCAR ® Nominee Rosie Perez (1993 Supporting Actress, "Fearless") also star in this inspiring story that shows how profoundly parents can affect their kids’ education.

This movie is by far the best movie I have seen in quite some time. Despite what most people are saying, which is their own opinion and I respect that, it is inspiring to see a mother go to such lengths to get the best for her daughter. If all mothers were like that then there would be a lot less failure and crime in this country. Here's one of my opinions, you can't critique a movie that is based on something that actually happened, even if it is loosely based on it. This is inspiring and heart warming and Maggie Gyllenhaal did a fantastic job. This is worth more than just a watch. It's worth your attention of not only you but your heart. Pay attention and learn something people!!
  • Vapor from the Orwellian school reform crowd

School reform sounds nice, but its purpose is malevolent and illogical. Students in 25-30 other countries outperform (by as much as 2 standard deviations) their peers in the US, so reformers argue we should divest some public education $$ and move it via charters and vouchers into for-profit alternatives. The problem with this logic, and a fact reformers never mention, is that ALL of these other countries are outperforming us with school systems that are more public and less private than ours is currently.

Fantastic movie! I've never written a review before but I'm shocked by the negative reviews this movie got. It's a terrific movie, period. By the way, I'm a democrat and it doesn't make a bit of difference. Great movie, watch it!

I wanted to see it because it was a story about a mother's desire for a better school and problematic school. I was expecting something along the lines of Stand and Deliver or Lean on Me or even Freedom Writers. Problems in school? Yes, but it doesn't cut it to only identify a problem, and slap on an ugly face on teachers and have the school board to swoop in and save the day by liberating a school. Pure propaganda. Gyllenhaal does a decent job portraying a very peppy mother, Hunter has an almost interesting minor side story, but everything else is just painful.
