  • Intelligent, and perfectly cast

Many might not like this movie, but I do. As mentioned elsewhere, it has a layers-within-layers feel reminiscent of Inception. McAvoy, Dawson, and Cassel are the ideal actors for their roles. It would be difficul to picture anyone better. The story does take a while to unfold, but it is worth it. I like the conclusion as well, as all three of the lead characters end up as they should be. While this movie appeared under the radar and was not a success (which I largely attribute to a lack of marketing), I'm glad they made it. I think the overt showing of skin in one scene was totally unnecessary, patricularly as the director and cinematographer were able to artfully avoid the distraction during all other intimate scenes. This aside, it is a movie worth owning as I will probably watch it again every couple of years.
  • Kudos to Rosario Dawson, but direction was imperfect

Wish other American actresses had the moxy to pull of an exposed performance like that. Nice efforts for McAvoy, and company also. Interesting turn from Oscar Winner Danny Boyle, but not quite as crisp direction as other efforts (better known for Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, 127 Hours). Nonetheless, this made for a great "guys movie night," thanks to Rosario.

  • Should have been rated X not R

I was truly disappointed. It was great in the beginning & then by the end it became something like an xx rated movie. It truly wasn't necessary, because it was totally believable up until that point! Don't have kids anywhere near this movie!!!
  • the REAL work of art in this movie is Rosario Dawson.

No matter where the story takes you, it will make you think of Inception. Great, story, acting, directing, PHENOMENAL photography, music by Rick Smith of Underworld, BUT….you can't just explain away your entire movie in a voice over narrative. It leaves a greater impression on your audience when you lead them to a a-ha moment...
  • Very complex movie

Or is it complicated? This movie requires your full attention throughout the entire movie. But it has a good plot that does get a little too complicated at the end. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. You may want (or need) to watch this movie two or three times until all the hidden plots and twists and turns make complete sense. However, it is well acted, well shot and certainly deserves to be seen. Maybe a 5 star after all??

starts out slow and builds the story. then there is a escalation of action that leaves you twisting in the wind. lust, love, crime, corruption all twisting, hanging, dangling for the mental spectacle that is trance. Better than your average mental thriller...
  • Worth watching, but far from Danny Boyle's best

I'm a big Danny Boyle fan, and while this isn't a bad movie, it's really far from his best work. There's come clever ideas, and some good themes, but it tries to do way too much in the time and leaves too many plot holes. The characters don't have much real depth and the central premise is fundamentally unbelievable. This makes it a 3 star for me. Worth watching, but it falls short of what it aimed to be. Maybe I should just rewatch Trainspotting again.
