Description

The Côte d'Azur, 1915. In his twilight years, Pierre-Auguste Renoir is tormented by the loss of his wife, the pains of arthritic old age and the terrible news that his son Jean has been wounded in action. But when a young girl miraculously enters his world, the old painter is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy. Blazing with life, radiantly beautiful, Andrée will become his last model, and the wellspring of a remarkable rejuvenation. Back at the family home to convalesce, Jean too falls under the spell of the new, redheaded star in the Renoir firmament. In their Mediterranean Eden - and in the face of his father's fierce opposition - he falls in love with this wild, untameable spirit... and as he does so, within weak-willed, battle-shaken Jean, a filmmaker begins to grow.

  • A beautifully artful and leisurely paced film

I really enjoyed the casual pacing and gorgeous cinematography in this film. The acting was good and the redhead Christa Theret is lovely. This is not a Hollywood style story with over done drama, but it is a thoughtful peek into the life of one of the master artists of the 20th century.
  • A slow but beautiful movie

This movie is definitely not for everyone. It moves very slow but it's not necessarily boring, although quite a few scenes do get pretty tiring. The best thing about this movie is the cinematography; every scene is amazing to look at and it's just so visually appealing that it makes up for most of the boring scenes. If you enjoy French art history, this is the movie for you, but if you're like me and only want to watch this movie because it's in French (I take French in school), you'll probably be disappointed and pretty bored because it's nearly 2 hours long. It's a pure drama with romance in it, so be prepared.
