  • A shockingly heartbreaking tale.

I clearly remember seeing this film with my husband in the theater. After a long journey for the main character we see her absolutely ruined & totally without hope. There's very little human kindness... 😢

Definitely an art-house film that the critics loved for a bunch of hoity-toity reasons. Great: Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of a self-centered, condescending, mean, shallow person who drowns in the depths of her denial. Hated it: Uneven plot, over-wrought plot, plot. Great: Alec Baldwin’s character who visibly changes into a slimy, smarmy predator upon the disclosure of the lottery win of his sister-in-law and her husband. Hated it: Uneven plot, over-wrought plot, plot >> on soooo many levels. In the case of this film, the parts (aspects that were good), when added together do not balance out with the sum (film as a whole) that, to me, was barely even mediocre.

The movie apparently depicts San Francisco, not as it "is," but as as it is viewed through the eyes of a stereotypical high-society New Yorker (who, in turn, is depicted through the eyes of the stereotypical San Franciscan), and so forth. Woody Allen entirely succeeds. Snap snap snap!

One critic called it a comedy-drama, but this film is much more tragic than it is comedic. (I think I laughed only once.) Still, I thoroughly enjoyed Blanchett's Oscar-winning performance, as well as Allen's insightful depiction of Americans floundering between fantasy and reality.

Awful movie saved by terrific Blanchett performance in riches to rags story. I agree with other reviewers saying Woody Allen should get real. Totally unrealistic whiny view of women. Even the most sheltered woman in the world has more options than shown for poor Jasmine. Allen genuinely does not like women and that is as obvious as the big nose on his face. The heroine sinks into a quagmire of self pity and pathos. One longed to shake her and tell her to pull herself up by her bootstraps! Ending really was depressing. One felt nothing but pity when an upbeat Jasmine finding a job and having hope would have given us something to root for. Congrats Woody you continue your demoralizing views of women in your "art".

This film renews my appreciate for the artist Woody Allen is. Go Cate! Academy award well deserved. A lot of good acting in this movie. Even though Jasmine is an empty and shallow character she is an enigma. Her pain surfaces, yet we never see the depth of her as a genuine human being. Somewhere deep down Jasmine existed but we never got to see her. Amazing.

When it comes to Woody Allen films it's always a toss up. This one sadly landed on the oppisit side of the coin. The trailer was pretty misleading and after seeing it, it's just left me super bumbed out by the end. I'm not saying don't watch it, just don't expect a happy ending...
  • Mediocre Film Elevated to Good

Without Cate Blanchett, this would be another mediocre Woody Allen film, well-written in his usual way but nothing special. She elevates this material to the level of very good.

A skillful exercise in squalor and despair, the train runs flawlessly and on time to a destination no one but a drugged masochist would willingly visit. And God, how I hate jazz.
  • Great Film - why can’t I rent it?

Can iTunes please explain to me why it is so difficult to rent movies? Most of the movies I want to watch are not available for rent. iTunes is really losing my business because of the Buy Only option. It just doesn’t make sense. I don’t need to own these films. Anyone have any feedback on this?
