This movie was an amusing surprise! It reminded me of a wonderfully executed fairy tale, or magical realism with some bloody scenes thrown into the mix. He threaded various stories of demons and parables well, when you look beyond the surface the messeges were quite deep

The movie is incredible. Can someone help me to find the song when the girl is dancing under the moon to lure in the pig demon? Thanks!

1st part of a 16th Century classic Chinese folk tale about a Buddhist monk and his trials he suffers to gain enlightenment. It has lots of wonderfully strange characters and really good special effects. The plot goes from horror, to slapstick comedy, to Kung Fu, to romcom, to spiritual awakenings in a entertaining way. The subtitles are good as is the soundtrack. This is the first part of the story, the origin of all the main characters, and ends at the beginning of the their journey to the west.

  • Thoroughly Entertaining

Very entertaining, I am watching it consecutively. While it lacks the impression of Kung Fu Hustle, Journey to the West manages to communicate many concepts and methods that make both films enjoyable. I find the types, archetype, even neo conceptualized stereotypes of Kung Fu heroes and villains novel and fascinating. These characters juxtaposed with relatable weakness, comedic skills, and humorous development merit viewing, and reviewing. Really hilarious, the Monkey Demon teaches the heroine to dance femininely. Kung Fu is at its best. Also, the giant right foot Kung Fu master is obviously brilliant. Great laughs. The development of the female lead is exquisite and hilarious. Her comedic tactics and consuming attraction for the hero weaves through the story, and ultimately precipitates the hero's development, again we see the Buddha palm reimagined; where merely the palm of Buddha would suppress idealized evil. Cannot wait for the sequel.
  • Watch it for the martial arts

Like Kung Fu Hustle, the martial arts (and artists) are some of the most stylish and enjoyable you'll see this year. Really do see the movie, just for this. And if you like the rest, so much the better. Unlike KFH, the main characters are not. Simply put, I found the 2 protagonists and their love story tedious and stupid. *MILD SPOILER ALERT* The main character pretends to depth but is selfishly putting aside all in his singleminded quest for "Buddhahood". The girl's interest in the boy keeps her from being enjoyable, because it quickly becomes 90% of what she's about. And the love story itself might have been written by me at age 5, but I would have been embarrassed at it's childishness by age 7. KFH had a character who you actually cared about even when he was being a tool. JttW, sadly, did not. At least not for me.
