So I was pretty excited to see this and heard good things. Four years later and I finally get to see it. Love the actors in it and the plot. Did NOT realize it had full on porn shots and was not warned about it. Do not need to see that at all!! Ruined the movie for me and never even finished watching it. 👎🏻

This Nymphomaniac series the worst Von Trier film ever. Extremely contrived to 'shock' you. LOL. I am shocked at the stupidity of the movie. Charlotte Gainsbourg the same self-absorbed narcissist as in 'Melancholia' and 'Antichrist'. How many times must we see this pathetic character, or is it just who she is? Common Lars, you can do better than this.

Lars returns in full form. Stunning visuals, clever well-written dialog and heartfelt moments. Lars is a masterful storyteller.

I have to be up front and declare that, in my humble opinion, Von Trier is a cinematic genius. No other director in the history of cinema has affected me more viscerally, and in such directness, with the fruits of his labor. Much like a master storyteller weaves a tale that is at once enchanting and rouses more questions than answers, his movies are consistently thought provoking, and do not belittle the intelligence of its audience. This film was no different from his past success, and while one would be remiss to think that a movie titled, “Nymphomaniac” would be focused on the sexual and profane, it is but a fragment of an overall more complex narrative. The film demonstrates, with chilling accuracy, the struggles of sexual addiction, and how one’s life can be irrevocably changed by that which we cannot (or often fail to) control. It is a film that, should you watch with an open and unbigoted mind, will allow you a rare and detailed glimpse into the mind of a woman who not only suffers due to her addiction, but accepts, reconciles, and overcomes it, all in the span of a 4 hour film. A masterpiece of cinema, and a film that any serious, intelligent, and mature minded individual should experience.
  • The actress ruins the film.

Shia LaBeouf and Charlotte Gainsbourg are both very good in this deranged tale of obsessive sexual addiction by controversial director Lars von Trier (known to shock us.) The film tells a story about a woman telling a story to a stranger about her sexual awakening and then her self-described ‘nymphomania’ and how it has basically ruined her life and made her a terrible person. The stranger doubts that she’s truly terrible and she keeps telling him more of the story allowing him (and we, the audience) to draw the conclusion for ourselves. It’s a brilliant idea and it’s only partially executed flawlessly. The acting is really good (except for Stacy Martin who plays the younger version of Gainsbourg’s character; she’s like a dead-eyed zombie the whole movie) and the way it looks is clean and amazing. I just wasn’t that impressed with what the story amounted to in this Vol. anyway - but I’m willing to finish the movie just to see what happens. The movie is extremely explicit sexually but it never feels like porn, it’s done artfully. I really feel like the actress playing the young version of Jo, while beautiful in her own way, took me out of the film and jeopardized almost every emotion that stirred in the script. She just wasn’t very good.

It’s not *nearly* as dirty as I expected. Certainly less shocking that Antichrist, etc, to my sensibilities. I also found it unexpectedly funny. Once again, von Trier is making films unlike any out there. His assembly almost renders the insipid popularity contests of films (stars, ranking, opinions) irrelevant. He’s actually… making… ART. What a concept.
