Description

In her first dramatic role, Kristen Wiig gives "a beautifully restrained performance" (The Hollywood Reporter) as Johanna, a profoundly shy, shabby housekeeper hired to care for Mr. McCauley (Nick Nolte) and his granddaughter Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld). Despite her outgoing nature, Sabitha carries wounds from the death of her mother years before, while her father (Guy Pearce) is a hapless recovering drug addict with a certain ragged charm. In an act of mean-spirited rebellion, Sabitha fosters a pseudo-relationship between Johanna and her father through a series of forged emails, never dreaming of the potential harm. However, Johanna is not a demure cut-out, but rather a woman for whom the phrase "still waters run deep" could have been coined, and the young girl's cruel prank provokes Johanna to indulge in something long missing from her life: the dream of a future and a home of her own.

  • Bertolt Brecht’s Mary Poppins

If Bertolt Brecht were still alive and if he were a filmmaker, this would be an adult version of “Mary Poppins”. Particularly I thought the movie was pretty boring. Not bad, but somewhat amateurish.

I found this film and rented it on the basis of a review by Richard Roeper and a couple of other positive reviews. I wasn't at all disappointed--especially a noteworthy performance by Wiig. The only problem I had was why a quite timid young woman would travel alone to Chicago and climb into a hotel window. Perhaps I need to read Munro's short story to find out.
  • HORRIBLE!!

Really bad acting, the lead actress was like a person with no feelings or anything, like a stick figure. I kept saying to myself that it's going to get better but it didn't, it just got worse. This movie is very boring. Don't waste your money on this. I just lost and hour and 40 minutes of my life watching this movie that I will never get back.

While watching this movie I felt almost a maternal worry for Kristen’s Johanna, and as the film progressed, I was filled with a sweet joy as she found her own version of happiness. In fact, the way that this movie shows how its characters bloom and blossom is its best feature.

It is refreshing to see this side of Kristin Wiig

If amorphous intentions, hand wringing and the most pedestrian self-absorption were in the entertainment olympics, this would be a hands down gold medal. If thats not the case perhaps this is a bad idea to put even a single penny towards encouraging and steer far, far away from it….

Strangest movie I've seen in awhile, but I like that it was unique in a quiet way.

This is a deeply moving film. It's so rare to see such a quiet yet powerful reflection on the need to connect and find love. Both characters had great faith in the power of spiritual as well as physical attraction to transform. Not a film to miss if you care about what's really important about the human condition.
