Description

A UFO crashes near an isolated military base in the far Arctic. Scientists recover the craft's now-frozen alien pilot and take it back to their base. While debating whether to study the alien, try to communicate with it or kill it, the pilot awakens--and the scientists' question of if it is friend or foe is quickly answered. Now, trapped in a frozen wasteland with an unstoppable, nonhuman creature that sees them as prey, the small band of scientists come face to face with The Thing.

Should be 1.37:1, not 1.78:1 as presented on iTunes. Tops of heads trimmed off throughout.
  • Great movie, poor presentation

As others have noted, this movie is currently only available in a cropped format. I wish I had known before I purchased. It looks cramped and betrays the director's vision. Hoping Warmer will update it soon to an uncropped scan.

I was disappointed to find Warner Bros. is not streaming the restored version of The Thing from another World it currently has on Blu Ray(which I also purchased). Apple take note. Though not perfect the new Blu Ray version of the film is miles above what is currently streaming. The film is not streamed in the proper aspect ratio. It has the the top and bottom of the image cropped so it appears widescreen. It also has a lot of really bad, blurry scenes. As many of us are rebuying movies in the digital format, I wish studios would get the message that they need to keep their older classic movies current with the restored versions in order to retain its digital/rental customers.

The film is presented in 16X9 vs. 1.37 : 1. This is a movie Howard Hawks buffs and film buffs love. This is an insult to the serious watcher and collector of movies. I want my money back.
  • Great Classic Sci-Fi But in the Wrong Aspect Ratio

Howard Hawkes The Thing from Another World is 50s sci-if at its best and the precursor to modern sci-fi adventure tropes. Sadly this presentation is marred by the iTunes version being in the wrong aspect ratio. It’s been cropped to 16:9 which cuts off the top and bottom of the original 4:3 frame.
  • Nice in HD but Cropped

This is one of my all time favorite science-fiction horror films filled with all the Hawksian goodness. The iTunes HD version is pretty good but the image is cropped which is a terrible thing to do to this classic. There is an uncropped restored version available from Warner Archives. I was hoping this iTunes version would come from that transfer but sadly it’s not. This appears to be the cropped TCM version. Hopefully iTunes will update this file to the new Warner Archives version soon.
  • Movie: excellent; transfer so-so

I love this movie and decided to finally add this to my online library -- I already own 4 or 5 different versions of this movie. This transfer is a bit wonky. The print used is not the best one that I've seen and more damning, the top and bottom of the frame have been trimmed to change the aspect ratio of the iTunes file. I spent the first 2-3 minutes thinking to myself "what's wrong?" I pulled up my DVD copy side by side on my monitor and noticed that the image had been cropped. Not cool! It isn't as bad as the colorized version Ted Turner published a few decades ago, but come on. I realize that this isn't Criterion Collection quality cinema, but please respect the film's visual integrity.

The flow of this 1951 horror movie plus the interactions of the cast make this one of the finest you can watch. The situation presents itself as believable with no gimmicks or fancy setups. Stands out and above many movies made today.

My all time favorite movie classic that I have watched over and over again since the very early 60's. I even have a copy of this with the creatures real name was David Whitmore instead of James Arness. Thank you Itunes for finally adding this fine classic movie to my Itunes collection. Great movie for young and old and especially for those that have a love for old black/white horror classics. For get that it doesn't follow the book and set back and relax and enjoy one of the great non special effects movies.
  • STILL SPRY AT 64

This movie proves that you don't need expensive special effects to make a compelling sci-fi film. A good story, good acting and a good director are still important after 64 years.
