  • Clever mode of narration

The story of the unabomber has been told in various ways. From the dull dramatization of the early nineties to ambitious documentaries like "the network" or interviews with the original detectives involved in the solution of the case. This miniseries tries to unify all these approaches without narrating away the inherent contradictions of the subject or simply taking sides. So the Leitmotif whether we are captives in the cage of a modern technologocial society which forces us to obey by any means is carried through until the very end. Neither the victims perspective nor the internal battles of the FBI is neglected. The deconstruction of the semiotic and linguistic signature of the bomber adds another level to the repertoire of the profiling of crime scenes without the presence of a criminal. From the beginning the personal struggles of both, Kaczynski and his profiler and their out of the box thinking approaches for the (imaginary) solutions of their conflicts and riddles is paralleled in the mode of narration of the screenplay. On top of that, the cinematography and acting is outstanding. The revitalization of the later decades of the 20th century brilliantly captures the moods, styles and motives of the generations involved. Even minor characters are very round with an astonishing psychological depth. Although the actors for the various positions within the FBI apparatus are well known to the audience they leave their stereotypes behind for an authentic painting of the professional deformations within a large administration. Highly Recommended!

What made this series very good was the intensitiy of the persuasion of Ted;s paradigm enough to overwhelm and forgive his serial murderous savagery. Excellent portrayal of a genius...gone mad. He was in charge of his dream until he got to court where he was judged on his horrifying deeds not on his thoughts.

It's in the same style as what Fincher did for the Zodiac movie. Very well done.

It doesn’t take long to forget that this excellent series is brought to you by the Discovery Channel. You are instantly plunged into the world of new FBI profiler Fitzgerald, whose speciality is forensic linguistics, suitable for figuring out criminals who like to send letters and share their thoughts. His special talents are immediately scooped up by the Unabomber task force, who’ve been hunting him with no success for nearly 17 years. It takes Fitzgerald to tell his superiors that they’ve got him all wrong, the guy they are hunting is brilliant, not stupid. For those who enjoy profilers, there are scenes that will remind you of Manhunter—the first film about Hannibal Lechter and Will, the dangers of entering the mind of a killer. Looking forward to upcoming episodes.
