Description

Since its initial episode in 1998, MTV's award-winning True Life documentary series has told remarkable real-life stories of young people and the unusual subcultures they inhabit. Whether documenting the lives of gay marriage activists, individuals dealing with obesity, or teens in high school, the True Life series tells its stories solely through the varied voices and points-of-view of its characters — putting the series in the unique position of reflecting the state of youth culture at any given moment. The 2007 collection includes: "I Have Autism," "I Live in the Projects," "I'm Pregnant," "I'm Going to Rehab," "I'm Looking For My Father," and more.

I rarely watch TV anymore due to the lack of decent shows and diversity. This is one show that I can actually sit down and watch without being annoyed with the "characters'" lack of class. It's inspiring and not only is it a Reality show that actually has REAL typical American lives, there are real people with real struggles. As a struggling "young person" many of these problems I can relate to. I respect the fact that these people even agree to be a True Life individual. The show is amazing. It gives people hope to know that theres someone else out there dealing with or struggling in the same way they are, and that they aren't alone.

Although I applaud MTV for documenting the stories of 3 exceptional autistic individuals, I do feel that MTV does not properly research material before airing. In the story of Jeremy, I was appalled. The 'pointing to letters on a letter board' method that they filmed Jeremy using is called 'facilitated communication'. This method was once used but proven to be unscientific and not the reflections on the child pointing, but the words of the person holding the users hand. In effect Jeremy is not talking, but his teachers and mother are pointing to what they want him to be saying. MTV edited a lot of this out, but you can still clearly see that Jeremy IS NOT independently communicating. I feel sorry for Jeremy and parents like Jeremy's mother who want their child to communicate so badly that they will go to such extremes. With over 20 years of experience helping children and adults with autism, it is sad to see that with all the research that has been successfully conducted, the media are still only focusing on the unscientific methods to advocate. I applaud Jonathan, Jeremy, and Elijah for their ability to show others the reality of living with a pervasive neurological disorder. Please note that MTV does not site any sources for the statistics that they refer to within the episode.

Well, I don't watch any of the shows they put up here, but that's not what I'm complaining about. Why doesn't iTunes have some more free MUSIC? They went from 4 or 5 songs and a video to 1 or 2 songs and 7 videos. Not everyone has video iPods, so we need more audio! And at least put decent shows up here, since I know that we won't be getting more music anytime soon.

It's nonfiction television, and its REAL LIFE it's relatable and not in the well if you excuse 99.95% of the drama of One Tree Hill i could relate to Lucas but it's True Life. I am absolutely ADDICTED. PLEASE get the older seasons up
