Description

Bringing to life the tumultuous times in which Lincoln led his country, some of his finest Civil War moments, and his final hours, Abraham Lincoln: His Life and Legacy is the ultimate tribute to a man who many consider to have been our greatest commander-in-chief, but who thought of himself as “the loneliest man in the world.” The comprehensive set examines the Lincoln legacy in a modern context, from his early days in Illinois, to the turbulent times that led up to the Civil War, and the defining moments of his presidency. It unravels the myths and misconceptions around his tragic assassination, including what motivated Johns Wilkes Booth, and whether he acted alone or was part of a conspiracy. Abraham Lincoln: His Life and Legacy examines the contradictory theories and surprising gaps in our knowledge of this stoic statesman and the country he helped shape. The set includes: Lincoln; Investigating History: Lincoln: Man or Myth; Man Moment Machine: Lincoln and the Flying Spying Machine; Conspiracy? Lincoln Assassination; High Tech Lincoln; Sherman’s March; and The Hunt for John Wilkes Booth.

The show is tedious to watch. Video clips are used too frequently and seem to be unrelated to the story line. The director jumps back and forth from the day of his assasination and his early life and instead of making it interesting it disrupts the flow of the story. Why was it necessary to raise the issue of him sharing beds with men since that was the norm for this period of time to talk about the potential that he was homosexual? Because someone said they needed to know? Many of the founding fathers and other great americans had to share beds but that didn't mean they were gay. And why raise the spector of him supposedly contracting syphyllis? I think the director wasted much time on these issues when he had access to a lot of historians that could have shared even more new insight about the man. Ok but even though I purchased them I will delete them as I don't think they would be worth watching a second time.
  • Not Good. Very Boring.

Not informative. Directs too much time and focus to Lincoln's depression and not enough on his actual life. He's depressed. We get it. Now tell give us a biography, or some other sort of insight other than how incredibly depressed he is.
  • What history?

If I had wanted to hear more unsubstantiated rumours that Lincoln was a homosexual I could have purchased this video from any website. I guess I was wrong to figure that History Channel would not produce a program full of innuendo, falshoods, and gossip. You spent more than half of this series wondering if he or his wife were mentally unstable and not near enough on the fact that this man SAVED THE UNION and made the modern United States POSSIBLE. I expected so much more and received so little. What a waste of my time and money.
  • Psychobabble and melodrama

Between the hyper-dramatic patented History Channel re-enactments (e.g., blurred images of his father striking him with a wooden switch) and the psychobabble around Lincoln's mental state, I found this uninformative and basically unwatchable. Very disappointing.

First of all, I agree with both of you that Abraham Lincoln was the greatest Republican president this country has ever had. Secondly, I do think Harry Truman was a good president. He ended World War Two. He is not my favorite Democratic president (FDR or Kennedy probably is,) nor was he from my state (I live in New Jersey, not Missouri) but keep in mind we would have had to invade Tokyo to end World War Two otherwise. Many innocent Americans would have died, and many Japanese citizens caught in the crossfire. Also, I do not believe that Pres. Bush lied to us about Iraq. I am a moderate liberal, and I believe that Bush made a huge mistake. Bush believed that Iraq had those weapons, and so did many Americans at the time. Well, that's what I have to say.
  • The greatest president who ever lived...

Abraham Lincoln is without a doubt, the greatest president who ever lived. He saw that everyone, no matter what color skin they have, is equal under the eyes of God. He got the nation through the worst war in U.S. history, the Civil War. He won the war, freed the slaves, saved the union, and made it clear to everyone who thought Democracy was weak that United States could survive anything. Without Lincoln, there would still be slaves and we wouldnt be the United States, and of course without Lincoln, Barack Obama would not have been able to become president. God bless Abraham Lincoln, and God bless the United States of America... Edit: You are correct about Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the people did not deserve to die. However, one good thing about the bomb was the fact that we didnt have to invade Tokyo. By dropping the bomb, we saved the lives of thousands of our soldiers, as for his Cold War and Communist policies, well he had his ups and downs. But he still remains my favorite Democratic president (mostly because he came from my home state, and is the only president from that state) Also, you are right about Andrew Johnson, Lincoln chose him for VP in order to get some Democrats to vote for him.
  • Three stars because in at least the first two episodes....

...you can only see the names of the people talking and can barely make out "author" if they are one, but you can't make out what they are the author of. You can help these authors make more money by not clipping out that information from the show. What specific way is this supposed to not only benefit the author, but us, the customers as well? Other than that, I find this series to be a pretty good one. I am going to learn stuff I never knew! Yay!!
  • Fantastic! one of the Greatest!
