Description

A powerful and haunting story from Oscar winning writer/director Jane Campion starring Elisabeth Moss, David Wenham, Peter Mullan and Holly Hunter. 12 years old and 5 months pregnant, Tui Mitcham walks into a freezing lake ... then disappears. Robin Griffin is a gutsy but inexperienced detective called in to investigate. As Robin becomes more and more obsessed with the search for Tui, she slowly begins to realize that finding Tui is tantamount to finding herself - a self she has kept well hidden. Set against one of the most amazing and untouched landscapes left on the planet, Top of the Lake is a powerful story about our search for happiness where the dream of paradise attracts it dark twin, the fall.

  • Running out of gas in New Zealand

This "exposing the sexual horrors of life in a corrupt town thing" could have been done in 3 episodes. After all its been done in less. But it drags on, through the mud, for 7. Seems to have been written on contract with a deadline that makes it a disconnected mess. I kind of expected more from Jane and Holly.

I expected much more from Jane Campion. The plot is completely predictable—in fact, in many aspects Campion ripped-off John Sayles’s 1994, Lone Star. Sayle’s movie is far superior—the cast of Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Peña, a young Matthew McConaughey, Frances MacDormand, Joe Morgan, and Kris Kristofferson deliver superior performances. Campion’s cast is uniformly flat. Holy Hunter is especially poor. Elisabeth Moss’s petulance plagued characteization is increasingly difficult to watch. Be warned; watching this “mini-series” is a waste of your time.

This is one one the greatest shows I've seen in a long time. Depressing topics but the courage and demeanor of the chatterers carry the show to new hights
  • Beautiful & Frustrating

Eerie, atmospheric, beautiful scenery... but there is no mystery as its clear what is going on. The acting is compelling and you hope that the storytellers are misleading you. They aren't. When you get to the last two episodes, you're wondering 'why is it taking her so long to figure it out?'
  • Engrossing Storyline

The best mystery miniseries I've seen, with a bit of Kiwi Noir. The characters are very well thought out, the script writing is very adult, the scenery is stunning, and the plot line keeps you continuously engaged. Reminds me of the show The Killing, without being quite so depressing.

I viewed all 7 episodes in an evening! The story, characters, and New Zealand drew me in. Tremendous performance from Elisabeth Moss.
  • Mostly really good

The story developed nicely, I was interested to learn what motivated the characters and this was laid out in a way that was suspenseful. Probably would have given this 5 stars but the ending seemed a little contrived.

I watched it through the first time and when it was over immediately started rewatching it. Every scene is just gorgeous, the characters are intense and interesting, the whole thing is just fantastic.

I really tried to like this. I watched all the episodes, and in the end, I've just wasted seven hours of my life. Don't let it happen to you.
