If it had been an original show, it might have stood a chance, but trying to recapture a great cult favorite is usually a bad idea, and especially so when hack writers decide to try and "improve" on the original. The beauty of the original was that Kolchak was just a shlub doing a job and fighting authority when it got in his way. This version is just too weighed down by oughties angst and X-FIles like conspriacy theories to resonate with any of its original fans. That having been said, some of the stories are decent enough horror stories and are worth at least a watch.

I had high hopes for this, having loved the original series as a kid. The problem is, what I loved about the original series was Darren McGavin. I loved the character. This show doesn't have characters, it just has people reading lines. To give you an idea of the difference, imagine Firefly with a different cast...one that didn't understand any of the nuance of the characters Joss Whedon had created. No chemistry between them, no whimsical and well-timed little facial expressions that betrayed a lot more going on behind what was being said, no love of the story being told, just a cold and obvious reading of the script. That is this show. Like boiled tofu with a little pseudo-horror salt added in an effort to give it flavor. All you get is salty blandness.

I really wish this series had not been cancelled. Stuart Townsend rocks as Kolchak. Stories are perfect and scary. Timeless is my favorite so far just from the sheer creep factor. I would recommend for anyone interested in X-files type shows.
  • One of the best shows I've ever watched.

Honestly, this is a wonderful TV show. I've no idea why it was cancelled, but I really wish they had kept it on the air. Each episode is intrigueing and thoroughly interesting, and I can only wonder how much better it would have gotten. It's definitely worth the money.
  • Why oh why was it canceled?!

ABC pulled the plug on this show prematurely. Had they given it more time, it could have been such a cult classic! The scripts are brilliant, the camerawork is wonderful, and the acting is spot-on. The actor who plays Kolchak is engaging, witty, and just the right amount of brooding, Perri is funny and realistic. Another good show canceled before its prime.
  • The best show canceled before it was given a chance

I think that this is the best show I've ever seen. Truth be told, I bought the DVD two weeks ago, watched episode 1 and half of 2 before I put it away on my shelf. Yesterday I pulled it back off the shelf and re-watched them and I didn't really enjoy it until episode 5. Episode 5 and onward is when the show got good. I think if ABC or any other network picked up the show for a second try and re-played the entire first season of 10 episodes then it would gain a cult following bigger than The X-Files.
  • Definetly A Cult Classic

Being a big fan of the old Night Stalker series and movies starring Darren McGavin, I downloaded the first two episodes just to see if it had been done justice. I was pleasantly surprised, so much I'm downloading the rest!!! It's just a shame that we will only have one season out of this as I feel alot more could have been done with it given time.

This series was dropped before it could ever generate a buzz thru the community. Frank Spotnitz is a wizard at what he does, and the decision to drop this series so soon is a slap to the face of one of the most prolific writers in Hollywood. Go check out the short lived show MillenniuM if you need proof. But even with all that being said, WHERE IS THE ORIGIONAL NIGHT STALKER w/Darin McGavin? It appears to be no longer available. This can't be true. The origional series was the one that inspired Chris Carter to do X-Files. Please say it isn't so....
