  • Missed opportunity

The accomplishments of Ms. Copeland are undeniable - she is a stunning dancer with a unique combination of grace and power. The movie however barely makes it any further than being a very long 'selfie'. There is barely any mention of her background. Her family is basically absent from the narrative. I was also surprised that the accomplishments of Alvin Ailey and his start dancer and later director of the company, Judith Jamison was never mentioned. It felt a bit as if Ms. Copeland had done this without any other black woman ever having accomplished anything of note in the dance world. Too bad, too bad. And as I said, I don't see this as a reflection on Ms. Copeland, but on the people who created the documentary.

I would purchase this highly anticipated documentary right now but iTunes is only allowing a rental? I know my ballerina would want to watch it over and over but not for $6.99 each time. Please improve the options iTunes, Misty deserves better.

Just watched this film at IFC on opening night in New York City. The crowd ranged from the young, hip urban set, to senior citizens to five-year olds. Men and Women. People of all races. Misty’s story will touch what it means to be human inside of you. A Ballerina’s Tale gives you a look inside the impossible, competitive world of classical dance and how so very few make it to the top, let alone black ballerinas. After a seeming career ending injury, the documentary traces Misty’s comeback and return to the stage. (Her leg still hurts a little she told the crowd afterwards)! This documentary is well worth your time.

Amazing first hand account of history being made as it happens. Loved all of the achieved women of color that appeared to contribute to the telling of Ms. Copeland's story. A must see for any young dancer. Truly inspirational.
