Description

In this gripping and emotional sci-fi romance from acclaimed director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult play Nia and Silas, two people who work together in a futuristic society known as “The Collective." A seemingly utopian world, "The Collective" has ended crime and violence by genetically eliminating all human emotions. Despite this, Nia and Silas can’t help noticing a growing attraction between them, leading them to a forbidden relationship—at first tentative, but then exploding into a passionate romance. As suspicion begins to mount among their superiors, the couple will be forced to choose between going back to the safety of the lives they have always known, or risk it all to try and pull off a daring escape.

A slow, quiet love story. Yes it's plodding, and yes it's simplistic. But you can't deny the power of these simple performances. While it's unclear why a society would ever go down the path to this distopian future, if you take it at face value you can't help but be taken in by Hoult and Stewart's affecting chemistry. Another way to think of this film is simply as a vital, and alive rendition of first tender love in all its confusion, innocence and excitement. This may be the most useful way to consider this film and in that respect it's not too much different from Stewart's usual work. Still worth watching.

I love this movie so much, I’m a depressed fella who keeps rewatching this sci-fi romance film, reminds me of thx 1138 by George Lucas. Most of y’all must find this movie boring but me, well I guess I’ll never get tired of it.
  • Well, *I* liked it anyway...

...it didn’t win an Oscar, but I’m not one to follow critics or awards to tell me what to watch. I wanted to see it because I like both Kristen Stewart & Nicholas Hoult, whom I first saw in Twilight and Warm Bodies, respectively. The premise snagged my interest as well, but I have a thing for dystopian futures or alternate universes/realities. Their performances in Equals lived up to my appreciation for their talent. I wanted more...I wanted to see past the end of this movie. I understand why it ended as it did, I’m just a whining 2 year old (plus another 40 or so years) stomping her feet a little, wanting more more more! It wasn’t reviewed well by those the studios look to for approval and the box office could have been better, so I doubt anyone is thinking to make a sequel...despite my wish. ...stupid studio

This was a real thoughtful movie. Not the usual SF rubbish that puts special effects above story. It reminded me of so much heartache that I have endured, finally finding love after years of pain. Finally the pain was so great that the only defence was to quit feeling anything, which I did for 12 years. Finding love has been worth enduring all the agony, even though I can't imagine going through it all again. A movie that brings all this to mind is worth watching again.
  • Slow story telling and gross scenes

It wasnt an awful story line, a bit slow. I had to quit watching, however, because of all the weird scenes involving food, and a super microphone picking up the sounds of the actor chewing. Absolutely disgusting and insufferable.

Loved every moment of this quiet but intense film. Nicholas Hoult's performance was understated and nuanced, which is why the film drew me in immediately. I felt every raw emotion he conveyed. For me, the echoes of Romeo and Juliet enhanced my viewing of the film, and gave it a depth it might not have otherwise had. I recommend this film for anyone who likes cerebral scifi.

Really a great film. Hoult and Stewart created truthful moments between two individuals embracing the emotions and physical touch of another for the very first time. Lighting produced a distict feel and silhouettes that were perfectly captured on screen. Watched for the first time last night, woke up and watched again. One of my new favorites.

This is an amazing, well written, well acted movie full of heart and the struggle to retain your most basic self in the face of state-enforced chemical lobotomy. Stewart and Hoult act beautifully, and the there is real tension, real hope, real heartbreak. If you're looking for some kind of action-sci thriller this isn't it. If you're looking for a great love stoary set agianst a sci fi spin on the current big pharma attack on humanity this is your jam. For what this movie was meant to be, it is perfect. If you were looking ofr a different movie, and then watched this movie, I can see you being dissapointed. But if I want to watch something like Terminator Salvation and then I rent Spielberg's A.I. who's fault is that? ;)
