Description

A not-so-average family wrestles with Satan in a house from hell in this heavy metal-charged shocker from the director of The Loved Ones. Diehard metalhead and struggling artist Jesse (Ethan Embry) moves with his wife (Shiri Appleby) and daughter (Kiara Glasco) to a middle-of-nowhere Texas town, unaware that the new house they got for an unbelievable deal comes with a grisly history. Disturbing demonic goings-on culminate with the appearance of Ray (The Walking Dead's Pruitt Taylor Vince). He's the home's former resident, and he's here to do the Devil's bidding. The cranked-to-eleven soundtrack blasts Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, and a thunderous original score by doom rock legends Sunn O))).

Had me on the edge of my seat nearly the entire movie. Outstanding performance by the whole cast, especially Embry.

There are only a few reviews on iTunes, of which any over 1 star must have been given by people involved in making this movie. This is a bore fest... horror??? Not a single jump scene. The ending is so stupid. Awful to the point of funny.

Good looking from a technical stand point and well acted. My problem with this movie was that the story felt extremely under developed and the ending was just plain silly. Maybe I went into it expecting to much because of the good reviews.
  • Heavy metal horror with soul

This is the kind of film that Rob Zombie tries so hard to make but fails miserably. It is taught, harrowing in places but also restrained. Most importantly, it has soul. The family are good people and the film ultimately takes care of them, which is how it should be. The cinematography is has a grungey feel without overdoing it, the music is excellently used (those insane chords at the beginning are brilliant). Ending is a bit contrived but the emotional pay off at the end is great. Actors are great - the daughter steals the show with her improvised concert in her bedroom... sublime.

Absolutely great. Best new horror I've seen in years. Not a jumpy horror thing, an actual story with characters you care about. I felt pacing was perfect and reactions to events VERY human and realistic. Stuck with me and I loved it! Anyone with a daughter ( especially fathers ) will feel this, from the love between characters to the all too human failings and screw ups. Scary, tense, funny, sweet, it's all there.

The top comment here so far is attributed to Vincent Canby, who, unless the name is coincidental, died 17 years ago.
  • A buildup.. but a worthwhile one

In the beginning first act I was a little worried about how the movie was going to turn out. But my fears were soon put to rest with a couple twists and a roaring final third. I don't want to say anything too much except rent it first if you're curious, but I'm just waiting until I can buy this sweet piece of Devil's Candy
