It’s like an entirely different movie. If you didn’t like the theatrical, give the directors cut a try

  • An Epic War Drama Movie Loosely Based On Homer's poem, "Iliad"

Wolfgang Petersen's "Troy" is an excellent epic war drama movie loosely based on Homer's poem, "Iliad." The movie plot was well written while including the important details of the original story. The movie has a decent pace not too fast or too slow. The writing is good as far as plot development goes The army special effects, movie sets and the scenery are all very beautiful. The costumes, the armor, the art and the weapons are impressive and stay true to the ancient Greek setting. The Aegean Sea looks so gorgeous. The clashing of swords and smashing of shields are heard so powerful and clear. The war between Ancient Greece and the Trojans is epic in scale and isn't about poetry. The movie dialogue was very good. The cast is overall excellent and delivers wonderful performances. Brad Pitt is awesome as Achilles. Brad Pitt delivers an upstanding performance by giving the right amount of power and strength for his character, Achilles. Eric Bana is terrific by portraying Hector as a noble, brave prince. Sean Bean was born for the role as Odysseus. Peter O'Toole gives a wonderful performance as Priam, the King of Troy. Orlando Bloom is very good as Prince Paris of Troy. Diane Kruger was a brilliant choice for the role as Helen of Troy. Brian Cox is outstanding as villainous King Agamemnon and is so convincing. Brendan Gleeson was excellent as Agamemnon's brother, Menelaus. Rose Byrne was good for her role as Briseis, a priestess and cousin to Hector. Saffron Burrows who plays Andromache gives easily an excellent performance. The lines are well delivered by the cast and their characters are believable. This movie contains some of the most elaborate action sequence. The fight scenes are great. The battle sequence between Hector and Achilles is one of the best choreographed fight scenes in epic war movies. The violence is likewise beautiful with blood and guts galore both on the battlefield and in single combat. The music score is very amazing. "Troy" is very action-packed and beautifully well-made. A very good, absorbing, entertaining movie with top-notch performances and a compelling story. You'll be connected with the magnificent and timeless qualities of the Homeric universe. Still one of the greatest epic movie drama ever made with Ancient Greek elements.

Stunning. A great film. A lot of action and even some romance. It really has it all. The cast is fantastic.
  • Get the Original, not Director's Cut

Troy is my favorite movie ever. I want to note though that Director's Cut has its pros and cons, but it should not be bought unless you also own the original theatrical release. The pros are the extended scene of Paris and Helen, better fight scenes on the taking of the Trojan beach, and slightly better conclusion to the end. Now the cons are only a couple with some of the changes in storyline/dialog aren't quite as good as the original, but the biggest problem with this version is the lack of good music. The original had an epic soundtrack especially the ending music, while this one lacked the great music. ONLY get the Director's Cut as an addition to the original release, not in lieu of it!

So much for "Greek tragedy". Every time I watch it Hector dies! he's the best of men not Achilles.

For one, seeing many reviews that say unlike the book, but,so what. Not like this is some religion and I don’t like the “the gods” talk in the movie, cause I believe in one God and his Son (Easter significance) but I enjoy this movie for the entertainment value on its own. Great action and fighting sequences and wow how about Brad Pitt, in great shape at 40 huh? His character is almost indestructible but no one is perfect except one ever so be forewarned. And ain’t Diane Kruger the most stunning woman that ever hit the big screen? Never knew she was ever fully nude in a movie (same year I first saw National Treasure movie) but at least the nudity is tastefully done. It is a very enjoyable movie in spite of the long time. Orlando Bloom is a bit of a wimpy fighting character while Eric Bana is bold and courageous in spite of the inevitable outcome but that is how the show rolls. Enjoy it and forget the silly book!
