Kevin Costner does not have an authentic bone in his body. There is nothing genuine about his acting. He is a made for tv schlock director. Man he really suuuucks.

This is an excellent film, but I'm very disappointed that they still haven't released the extended version on iTunes. Do yourself a favor and go get the 4-hour version (well, 3h:56m) on bluray. It's not ground-breakingly different, but you get more background and development of the characters and their relationships -- more depth, more metaphorical brushstrokes to fill in a larger painting. The film is spectacular. The scenery is stunning. The sound quality is pristine, both action and music. The orchestral music is breathtaking; John Barry's score here is honestly as good as John Williams. Definitely watch this loud on as good a home theater system as you can find -- high-end surround sound, good bass to fill everything out, big high-quality screen in a dark room -- go watch at a friend's house if that's what it takes. They did an amazing job in writing this film, and Kevin Costner got wonderful results in directing it. The story is personal and touching, and although Kevin Costner's character, John Dunbar, is generally stoic and quiet, and reading/writing in the journal (narration) may sound slightly unemotional, you can tell that the character is extremely thoughtful and caring, and those qualities are demonstrated in Dunbar's behavior and actions. The authenticity in the details with the Native American actors and the Lakota language and lifestyle seem, at least to my non-expert eye and ear, exceptional. I remember articles and stories at the time it came out that discussed the work they did to research and get the details right. Most of the film isn't high-action; it follows a smoother, more organic flow. But it's not boring. Besides the beauty in sight and sound, there's also always a feeling of uncertainty about how life will unfold -- first, in the relationship between Dunbar and the Lakota tribe; later, by the impending advancement of the white man. I don't like things that depict any large group, including whites, as all bad. But despite the whites being basically the "bad guy invaders" in this movie, I didn't get the feeling that that was the main point or that it was attacking whites in a big political context. Instead, it feels much more like a personal story in the midst of a larger historical context. Some people are good, some are bad, and most are really in-between, trying to figure it out within their societies. This film is truly epic, and I highly recommend seeing (and hearing) it. Though, again, I recommend going for the extended version (3h:56m) rather than this one (3h:1m).

This is one of my favorite films of all times. However, the directors cut is the definitive version. ITunes really needs to make it available.

I had to watch this movie for “extra credit” for college history class, and I must say this is one of Kevin Costner’s best movies. It’s a long movie but worth watching. Beginning was kinda slow like most movies, but once it got good it was hard not to watch. Loved it.

In studies of my brothers, the native Americans, I found this movie inaccurate. Found several concerns troubling: (1) the Pawnee were the victims of Lakota encroachment upon their land (not the other way). (2) It did accurately display the aggression, hate and bigotry and illiteracy of the US Army, which still exists today. “Ya’ turned Injun, didn’t ya?” (3) Compare the near extinction of an entire people (native americans) to the genocide of a few Jews. It is like comparing a thermonuclear explosion to a little firecracker. I would say to both the blacks and Jews: it was a long time ago. Let it go. You are not my enemy ... you are my brothers. Live in Peace...let go of your hate.
