Description

Based on an actual Civil War incident, The Horse Soldiers tells the rousing tale of a troop of Union soldiers who force their way deep into Southern territory to destroy a rebel stronghold at Newton Station. In command is hardbitten Colonel Marlowe (Wayne), a man who is strikingly contrasted by the company's gentle surgeon (Holden) and the beautiful but crafty Southern belle (Constance Towers) who's forced to accompany the Union raiders on perhaps the most harrowing mission in the war.

I was in this movie. A Cadet of Chamberlin Hunt Military Academy along with Jefferson military Academy. Charged down the hill after firing a couple round’s of power. I was the drummer next to the Boy who was pulled out of formation, he was spanked. What a thrill sitting around talking with the Duke and all the old timers. Lasted 2 weeks filming in Natchez Miss. What a way to get out of class. I’m 72 now but it’s all fresh in my mind.

Good Civil War film that depicts both sides well. John Ford is the only director that could handle the subject manner of this film and shoot in in such a way to enhance both the story and the characters. WIlliam Holden the nobel doctor and John Wayne is the nobel solder, both doing as they seem necessary to their profession, no matter the consequences.

Quite simply a magnificent film. John Wayne deserving of an Oscar for his part. A great story and even better soundtrack.

When the confederate boys come out of that academy with that band, they play the most wonderful music known to man

Love this Movie, but in the very beginning of the Trailer, there is a major error: The Confederate Cavalry singing that great song of the rights of the South, would not be carrying an American flag--particulary one which looks like it has 48 states--the contemporary one when the movie was made. Having southern cavalry in the Civil War carrying a US flag (of any age) is a major flub.
