The scenery was nice but the story was rather slow and dull. Should have rented....

A story of love and coming of age. It is my favorite piece of literature in the world and the movie certainly does it justice. Bravo.

this movie is nothing but a portrayal of how precious time is. not just to live ones life, but to enjoy it. for we all know that time can be taken just as fast as it is given. when we stand in the gleaming fresh water glowing from sunset and all that can be heard is the waterfall up the river, we find peace within ourselves. nothing can help us enjoy time more then finding things in life that create this feeling. it does not have to be fly fishing but something that brings ones self with god and his earth and time becomes a leaf in a winter breeze. this movie is my favorite of all time

I normally enjoy slow and quiet thought-provoking movies, but this one just doesn't catch. The problem is that it is too polished, so you never really get under the skin of the characters and what makes them tick. What does move is the stunning backdrop of Montana in the fishing scenes.
  • Not bad as the condensed version.

The movie is good. Redford captures most of the essence of a fantastic book. If you like this movie, you will love Norman Maclean's book.

Redford's treatment of the novella (one of my favorite stories) is true to the exquisite prose of Norman MacLean and the musical sound track by Mark Isham completes the portrait. This ranks as one of my top three movies. I wish Redford would make more movies and I am sad that MacLean did not write more than he did.
