Description

In Harm's Way, based on James Bassett's novel Harm's Way, has enough plot in it for four movies or a good miniseries (when it was shown on network television in prime time, it was broken into two very full nights). On the morning of December 7, 1941, a heavy cruiser, commanded by Captain Rockwell Torrey (John Wayne), and the destroyer Cassidy, under acting commander Lieutenant (jg) William McConnell (Thomas Tryon), are two of a handful of ships that escape the destruction of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Under Torrey's command, the tiny fleet of a dozen ships carries out its orders to seek out and engage the enemy fleet. But lack of fuel and a daring maneuver (but tragic miscalculation) by Torrey causes his ship to be seriously damaged. He's relieved of command and assigned to a desk job routing convoys in the shakeup following the attack, and his exec and oldest friend, Commander Paul Eddington (Kirk Douglas), is reassigned after a brawl, the result of his anger after identifying the body of his wife (Barbara Bouchet) who was killed during the attack while cavorting with an Marine Corps officer. Torrey's shore assignment leads him to reestablish contact on a very hostile level with his estranged son, Ensign Jere Torrey (Brandon de Wilde), his estranged son from a long-ended marriage, who is also serving at Pearl Harbor; he also establishes a romantic relationship with Lt. Maggie Haines (Patricia Neal), a navy nurse; he also befriends Commander Egan Powell (Burgess Meredith), a special-intelligence officer. Through his son's boasting during their bitter first meeting, Torrey learns of a top-secret offensive called Sky Hook — he figures out enough of it to impress Powell, and when Sky Hook gets bogged down by the indecisiveness of its commander, Vice Admiral Broderick (Dana Andrews), Powell convinces the commander of the Pacific Fleet (Adm. Chester Nimitz, unnamed here but played by Henry Fonda) that Torrey is the man to salvage the operation.

This movie has not stood the test of time. An early Hollywood attempt to provide solace for unfortunate event where the US was caught napping. A small epic, nearly 3 hours of 1 sides point of view for breeding hope. John Wayne stars, who is basically indestructible with an able supporting cast, including the late Kirk Douglas, a rapist hero of sorts! Even the great Henry Fonda makes a cameo. The enemy was never seen which was a shame! Avoid unless a die hard John Wayne fan.

Great plot and character development. A movie that reminds the viewer that the Anti-American political correctness minions that have taken over Hollywood will never come close to this American classic.

In Harms Way has an absolute all star cast. The action is great and the complexity of multiple storylines makes it keep you interested. One underlying take away is you can't kill The Duke in this one, no matter how hard you try.

The movie generates difficult feelings: it is an edgy screenplay, excellent acting, but had just a few too many stars and an almost fatal flaw in its direction by Otto Preminger — who for theatrical drama included a number of glaring errors in the film. The action was there, though the climax of the film almost required experience in naval tactics and was marred as a result. Nonetheless, the movie accurately portrayed the terrible war of a handful of ships and men thrust at the numerically-superior Japanese fleet. It’s difficult knowing that you’re considered to be expendable and that you’ve been selected for a suicide mission -- but you do your absolute best anyway, and inspire the best in others (this applies not only in the real-life Pacific war action, but in the performance of the actors in the face of Preminger’s direction and cast selection). In Harm’s Way was one of the last movies about World War II that was filmed in black-and-white, which in many ways made the film more dramatic. The movie had sloppy special effects own some cases, but the movie nevertheless made the case for the palpable fear of death-at-sea from engaging a superior enemy fleet, which was faced by an admiral who knew that he, his men, and his under-sized fleet were expendable. Overall, an excellent, well-acted film.

I've seen this movie before. I wished I could have it on my iPhone so I could watch it all the time. But they ask for to much!!! I mean, It should be at the most $5 for an older movie like this. What do they think we are billionaires who spend 10$ more on stuff where the could order it on amazon for $5? I'm very disipionted, I mean, what do they have to lose anyway?

One of Dukes best, acting is great, the ships they used is what they had to work with. Hugh Obrien was a Marine Officer, check out the top of his cover. I thought the combat in the movie was great. Remember they didn't have the special effects we have today.

This is a well-written war movie with a great plot and a historic back story. The acting, including John Wayne, Burgess Meredith, Patricia Neal, Carroll O'Connor, Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Tom Tryon (notice the size of this billing) is very good - particularly for an ensemble cast. And for those who love to "hate" on the Duke for his acting skills, he's wonderful in this film. Otto Preminger does a masterful job of getting the most out of this story and cast. And his FX are well ahead of their time. If you like films about World War II, add this to your "must see/must own" list.
