I don’t usually do reviews on here, mainly because I don’t think many read them. However, this movie convinced me to do so. This is such an underrated and forgotten masterpiece of a film. Peter Weir knows how to make raw, emotional and more importantly human films, and this is by far the one I’ve reacted so strongly to. Why Jeff Bridges was never nominated for this I have no slight idea, but after watching this I can say I’ve never seen him give such a spirited yet devastating performance as Max Klein. Rosie Perez and Isabella Rosselini are fantastic as well. However, DON’T watch the trailer, I’ll just leave it at that. The story isn’t what you would expect, at least as far as the trailer is concerned. It’s better to just get a rough idea of the synopsis and go in knowing nothing else. At first while watching it I will admit I was uncomfortable with how raw the film was, the pacing being very deliberate and also just how the story progresses. Stick with it. By the time the credits rolled I was in tears with how beautifully and deftly the film’s events come together to make for an otherworldly philosophical experience. I’ll never forget how I felt after watching it, maddened, emotional, but constantly thinking and analyzing and loving it even more. GO watch this film. You’ll be glad you did.

An amazing movie for anyone who has touched or been near to death. That would include thousands of cancer survivors, amoung others. Bridges performance was Oscar worthy! This comment from a Cancer survivor who spent 2 months with a stem cell & bone marrow transplant group of 15 persons); thereby witnessed how peple deal with their END. Some survived, many did not! One witnesses humanity at work, much as depicted it the movie.....some 1) filled with fear/confusion to 2) Tranquility/peace....to 3) calmness/courage with ability to simply turn it over. Some teenagers, others w/ young families, others older. One learns how hope works ....to the end for some . This movie depicts Human reaction to death as i witnesse. Clearly one does not know where they will be in this continuum until faced with it themselves. Same applies to their caregivers as depicted by his wife. Peter weir and bridges were masterful!

Why doesn't anyone ever say in a review, "I just didn't get it. Maybe it's me." If you go over to the classical music section do you leave reviews saying how boring Bach is? Or should a classical music lover go over to the R&B section and trash as many songs as possible without considering that they just don't get the style itself? This is actually a really great movie. But it is made for people who can relate to it. If you don't get it then you don't get it but can't you just recognize that there are a wide range of movies with different messages or whatever for a wide range of different kinds of people? Or maybe we should go the other way -- maybe we should decide to only support or make movies in one or two categories, the ones that sell the most. A lot of people love this movie. I do. But I probably like some movies that you like also. But when I don't get a movie - when I recognize that even though I didn't like it that it is definitely a quality production for people who can relate to it, I just say to myself - wrong style of film for me. If you leave a review saying a movie is bad when it is actually a good version of what it is - but you just don't happen to get or relate to or like that thing - be thoughtful. Be intelligent. Be kind. That's all. Don't leave reviews - although you definitely have a right to leave whatever review you want - I'm just saying, don't leave reviews trashing individual movies when it's the entire style and category of movie you don't like. Just think - wrong turn, wrong film, wrong kind of food, don't understand that sort of thing.

This is the review for the first half of the movie as I did not waste my precious time watching the rest of it. It is slow, boring, sad and non-sense. That's my impression from the first half. Good luck to you watching this movie!
