Description

Igby Slocumb, a rebellious and sarcastic seventeen-year-old boy, is at war with the stifling world of "old money" privilege he was born into. With a schizophrenic father, a self-absorbed, distant mother, and a shark-like Young Republican big brother, Igby figures there must be a better life out there -- and sets about finding it. Happily flunking out of yet another prep school, Igby is sent off to a military academy in the dreaded Midwest. With the aid of his mother's pilfered credit card, he goes on the lam. His darkly comedic voyage eventually lands him in New York, where he hides out at his godfather's (Jeff Goldblum) weekend pied-a-terre. There he encounters a deviant cast of characters. In his quest to free himself from the oppressive dysfunction of his family, Igby's struggles veer from comic to tragic.

  • Angst of Holden but more family problems

This film has some familiarity of J.D. Salinger's book A Catcher in the Rye but gives some more reasoning and direction in some ways. This was one of the first films that I think of when I think Kieran Culkin and it was probably my first introduction to independent film in 2003. The film does represent the fact that sometimes you may only have yourself to rely on and everyone else, even the ones you trust, can be holding you down.

This movie was great, surprisingly became a bit of a tear jerker...and I never cry in films. If you liked A Catcher in the Rye, which happens to be one of my favorite books, you'll love this. I almost would have bought it. It's truly worth a watch.

A great film using the classic Catcher in the Rye as it's jumping off point. And only gets better from there (as difficult as that sounds).
  • interesting yet depressing

The movie had an interesting plotline. Many of the characters felt flat and unbelievable however. Igby, the main character, was a memorable and complicated character. It was easy to have compassion for him. Plot was lot to take in. Acting was good. Music was good. Get ready for some depressing themes though.

Lost interest after 20 minutes. I just didn't care about Igby, who he is or what he's going through.
  • Not even worth the 99 cent SPECIAL

Got through 30 minutes of this movie. This movie promotes the decadence of society. Worst of all it's not funny, serious, or attention holding...purely indulgent. This movie shows the worst of people, only one who wishes to become a lesser person should invest in this film. Peace.
