Description

Grieving widower Garret Blake builds boats for a living. Rebuilding his life-that's another matter. But that's before Theresa Osborne comes to his North Carolina village. Theresa, a lonely divorcee and researcher for the Chicago Tribune, knows that Garret is the author of the message she found inside a bottle on a Cape Code beach. And she knows the message spoke to her in a way that profoundly touched her heart. Kevin Costner as Garret and Robin Wright Penn as Theresa bring high-voltage star power to Message in a Bottle, a tale of love lost and found based on Nicholas Sparks' bestseller and directed by Luis Mandoki (White Palace, When a Man Loves a Woman). "You choose-the past or the future. Pick one and stick with it," Garret's spry father Dodge (Paul Newman) advises. The advice sticks. So does the impact of this tender, movingly filmed tale.

Not only was the movie extremely uncomfortable due to its awkwardness. It was completely different from the book in so many aspects. Don’t waste your money. I’m a huge fan of Nicholas sparks and this was the worst movie he’s ever had a part of.

I watched it was is good up until the point where they kill Garrett and then it’s just sad because you expect the guy to get the girl not the guy to die!

This movie seemed promising, but it was way too long and it ended up having a depressing ending, which made the whole watch totally pointless. So annoying.
  • So so disappointed in the film...

So so disappointed in this film. I am a huge fan of Nicholas sparks and I finished reading his book and as soon as I put the book down I put on the movie and I was so sad to see how many changes they made that were not in the book. The book is and will always be so much better. I couldn’t relate to the characters in the film as I did in the book. And they shouldn’t have made so many changes that made the film really different from the book.
  • Four stars cuz the end was so 😢

I loved the movie. I have been a fan of Nicholas sparks for quite some time. Have not been able to see all the movies that have come thru theaters but I look forward to seeing more. The movie was everything but the ending was so sad. Very well done.
  • Really bad, and I wanted to like it.

I wanted to like this sweet story but the acting, the writing, everything was bad, but it could have been something. The whole time I just kept thinking, "how did it cost $80 million to make this movie." I can think of at least a few directors who could take $80 and make 6 or 7 masterpiece, brilliant, legacy films. So sad....those were the only tears I shed during the film.
  • No chemistry

The lead characters had no chemistry. Paul Newman was more interesting than the main characters.

Compared to other Nicholas Sparks 'book to movie" adaptations this one was rather dissapointing. Garrett seemed cold and unlikable in the film vs the book, and they made too many unnecessary changes. You're better off watching The Notebook or Nights in Rodanthe
  • 5 (Good Film) - 5 (Bad Ending) = 0

A Nicholas Sparks script inevitably comes to the proverbial fork in the road and unerringly chooses the low, lower or lowest available route. In MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE --- Sparks could stand on solid ground and warm our hearts --- or --- climb a tree and leave us heartbroken. Typically --- Sparks chose to seek and scale the tallest redwood. Otherwise outstanding, arguably worth a single viewing, the message in this bottle is --- also --- lost at sea.
