Description

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI is the story of 85-year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. He is the proprietor of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant inauspiciously located in a Tokyo subway station. Despite its humble appearances, it is the first restaurant of its kind to be awarded a prestigious three-star Michelin Guide rating, and sushi lovers from around the globe make repeated pilgrimage, calling months in advance and shelling out top dollar for a coveted seat at Jiro’s sushi bar.

This was excellent. Not my normal type of Documentary, but I gave it a go. It was wonderful from start to finish.
  • Wonderful documentary...though...

The movie lost it's luster of Jiro, as a master of his craft, around 45 minutes when the cooks mentioned that everything they do is to, "please Jiro." This is the epitome of extrinsic motivation and a near guarantee they will never be as good as him. A true master, in any field, knows that intrinsically motivating the next generation is the key to success beyond an individual with extreme talent.

Jiro's life is just a perfect lesson on what it takes to progress towards mastering a craft. He shows us there is certainly no shortcut. He may also cause you to question whether it's really worth it in light of the toll it takes on family life and one's own personal development. Not to be mean, but Jiro is one boring man.

What a great documentary! It ties in Japanese values, life as a restaurant owner, chef, and father, and even thoughts on overfishing. Even if you don't eat sushi this will be interesting to watch.
  • Awesome!

After seeing this movie, this restaurant is now on my top 10 list of places I must go before I die. Very well done. I'll be purchasing this movie.

It is too long. Intriguing at first, then boring after 20 minutes do the same thing.
  • Rather dull

I'm one for a good documentary, but I found this one so incredibly boring for most of the running time. There are some interesting aspects, however, on the whole, it does not live up to its praises.
