Description

Freddy Benson, a con(fidence) man, lives off women by waking their compassion with shocking stories about his fake fate. One day in beautiful Beaumont sur Mer, he meets Lawrence Jamieson, who shares the same passion, works the rich ladies with the same scheme, but in quite a different league. With the knowledge of his profession, Freddy forces Lawrence to teach him high-society behaviour, so that he himself can earn a major living. When time comes to say goodbye, Freddy decides to stay a little longer. As there is no way two con men can work a town that small at the same time, Lawrence and Freddy agree on a settlement: The first one to extract $50.000 from a young female target wins, the other leaves town. The sum is no match for Lawrence, the age of the lady no match for Freddy. Let the games begin!

The only bad news is that the first time you see this, you may find it confusing. The good news is that for several subsequent viewings, you’ll discover new intriguing subtleties. (Like Groundhog Day, but without the repetition.) The plot has three distinct layers, with the last only revealed at the surprise ending. The script is full of quotable lines. All three lead actors play their roles to perfection; it’s clear they are having great fun. Did you know that the original casting had Martin and Caine’s roles reversed? What could they possibly have been thinking? One would think that Ruprecht was created with Steve Martin in mind! Steve had a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by an actor in a comedy/musical. Apparently, as soon as the cast did a couple of scenes, they and the director set things straight. Like other reviewers, I waited a long time for this movie to be available online. Steve Martin has said that this is his favorite role. It is my favorite comedy, an all-time classic that I like to go back to again and again.

I would love to see this re-released in theatres. I own this and my kids now watch it with me. This is a classic movie that will entertain generations to come. Hands down, brilliant cinematic features, landscape and beauty of the location South of France. Actors are all top of their field. The dynamics and chemistry between Caine and Martin is undeniable and both actors mesh together beautifully. The movie will have you laughing years even centuries later! A MUST SEE!
