Description

Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent (Iris) and Lindsay Duncan (About Time) give exquisite performances as Nick and Meg, a long-married British couple revisiting Paris for the first time since their honeymoon in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. During a two-day escapade, wistful Nick and demanding Meg careen from harmony to strife to resignation and back as they take stock of a lifetime of tenderness and regret. A surprise invitation from Nick’s old friend Morgan (Jeff Goldblum), a hilariously boorish academic with a newly published book and fancy Parisian digs, soon leads them to an unexpectedly hopeful vision of what their love and marriage might still become.Directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill) and written by longtime collaborator Hanif Kureishi (Venus, My Beautiful Launderette), this magically buoyant, bittersweet film is at once brutally honest, sharply comedic, and undeniably romantic.

  • Unsympathetic characters

In the end, you just don’t care about the two protagonists. They come across as whinging losers; so “in touch with their unhappiness” you wonder why they don’t jump off a bridge. Sure, life’s hard; you don’t always get what you want, etc., but wishing you’d done something else, been somebody else, etc. is fairly pathetic behaviour that just doesn’t deserve a sympathetic response.
  • Wasted my time watching on a 13 hour flight!!!

I watched this movie during a 13 hour flight and I still thought that it was a waste of my time. The main characters switch so quickly from being romantic to total disgust with each other, that their emotions don't seem real in either side. By the end, I really could not care what was the outcome and I didn't care about their miserable marriage. Even when the acting is good, the story line falters and is quite depressing.

Horrible, boring, unbelievable, irritating, boring…and what’s with that ending…I’m so unmoved, I don’t even have the energy to go into any real detail as to why this was an utter waste of time. I’ve had enough of Jeff Goldblum’s trademark halting speech and mannerisms; once charming, they just grate on my nerves now. Don’t bother.
  • Uncomfortable to watch

I like all of the actors, and I'm a fan of dramatic comedies. But watching Le Week-End felt like watching dinner guests argue. Uncomfortable. Unpleasant. And, I decided after more than an hour of viewing time, unnecessary. I turned it off, and felt better.
  • Waste of Time

If you enjoy listening to your bipolar grandparents discuss their sex life, then this movie is for you. It is a complete mess of a movie, with characters you can't like, trying to evaluate their 30 year marriage. Only problem is, they are both INSANE. Call it an ArtHouse Film, or call it what it is - a pretentious hot mess.

Not because it’s set there, but the characters and story are tres French! I loved it, even in the painfully honest scenes..Great acting, great story….maybe you have to be pre-Iphone generation to enjoy it? I don’t get the bad reviews but to each his/her own
  • A Fine Film More Than Worth a "Mature" Viewer's Time

One of the best films available for download. Well-written, acted, and mature in its intention. Don't believe the rare disappointment expressed by viewers who are obviously too young to appreciate this honest and realistic film about marriage and what happens to some people later in life when they look back across the years and then around at where they are. The result is a satisfying metaphor that sets all of us who have lived past fifty squarely on our feet in the middle of the kind of happiness that anyone would embrace because it doesn't cost a dime. More than worth your time and the asking price for admission. But if you can't concentrate for more than five minutes don't rent this film. While it demands of you attention to detail, it is engaging and doesn't tie the story up in details. Who among us really would't want to find ourselves in this couple's shoes where love is anytime you're happy. Jeff Goldblum's character is so generous as is his performance.
