Description

Meet the Griffins — Peter, the big, lovable oaf who always says what's on his mind. Lois, the doting mother who can't figure out why her son keeps trying to kill her. Their daughter Meg, the teen drama queen who's constantly embarrassed by her family. Chris, the beefy 13-year-old who wouldn’t hurt a fly, unless it landed on his hot dog. Stewie, the maniacal one-year-old bent on world domination. And Brian, the sarcastic dog with a wit as dry as the martinis he drinks. The animated adventures of this outrageous family will have your whole family laughing out loud.

Where to begin with this show... I guess to start with, why would you watch this show based on the premise alone? A typical American family dealing with typical American family things? Ooh, groundbreaking. Never seen that before—except in the Simpsons and every other sitcom from this era and earlier. I heard so much about how "edgy" this show was. This show isn't edgy. It's crude for the sake of being crude so it can FEEL edgy, but it isn't. We live in 2015, and the show never gets better, so here's an interesting experiment—go watch one episode of Rick and Morty and talk about how "edgy" and "clever" this show is then. I couldn't do it, and I tried (not that I liked this show that much to begin with). We have The Simpsons, and it was even better when this show first came out, so animations that only contain stock characters aren't really necessary. And again—we've come pretty far, even since then, so now we have Bob's Burgers, a show full of character driven humor and clever writing that is lightyears ahead of this swill. This show is dated. It was best when it was first cancelled because there is no excuse for this show to continue to be made. I have already named two shows here that are better than Family Guy, and I could do so for a while—BoJack Horseman, Gravity Falls (yes, you read that right. I wouldn't say it if I didn't honestly think it), and even the Simpsons, which isn't as good as it once was, is still better than Family Guy. If I leave the field of animation, then the list gets ever longer: Arrested Development (the most well-written and clever show I have seen to date) and Parks and Recreation spring straight to mind. And yet, I never hear anyone raving about any of those shows like they rave over this (even Parks and Recreation is overshadowed by its close companion, The Office). At the end of the day, this is a poorly written show with characters who always come off as crass and mean going about their lives the same way I go about mine every day. This show may have been something special if the Simpsons was canceled and replaced with this, but it wasn't, and I think we're at a point where comedy has transcended the need for this show. 1/5.
