Conquest of Space

It has a few faults but the movie is beautiful from a visual aspect and the story is good enough to keep you interested with a satisfying ending.

This is sort of like a movie version of McHales Navy Goes to Mars but without the comedy. About as entertaining as a well behaved high school lunch room. Get a good one like When Worlds Collide instead.

Based on Wiley Ley's book and includes the stunning artwork of Chesney Bonestell - and the futuristic space station and winged-rocketship designs of Werner Von Braun, this vintage movie on the USA's foray into space is an excellent example of George Pal's ability to transmit an excellent "cutting edge" book - into a Hollywood quality movie with very good actors, decent script, great props and the latest technology - for it's day. I'd rate it as good - both technically and engrosing - as the classics "Time Machine" and "Forbidden Planet". Sure the post-WW2 American Hero-esq personnas are present but it also includes a Japanese American as part of the crew - and he is well cast and treated like a valued member of the crew. Props are first rate. Chesney Bonesell's extremely accurate matte artwork is present and looks excellent as usual. Check out Mars when they are approaching it and be amazed at it's accuracy. Sit back and enjoy the ride and chuckle at the 1950 vernaculars and "gung-ho" attitudes along with the very human characters in this movie and don't forget the popcorn. 5 stars. GJS
