Description

Spun from Daniel DeFoe's tale of the titular character, this sci-fi story involves a spaceship commander, Chris Draper (Paul Mantee) in a similar situation to the original Robinson Crusoe — but rather than being stranded on an island, our hero is on a hostile planet. Draper, Colonel Dan McReady (Adam West), and a test monkey look as if they are going to collide with a meteor. Draper and the chimp are able to eject themselves from the vessel, but McReady is not so lucky. The two survivors safely land on Mars and figure out how to breathe, drink, and eat on the inhospitable planet. After some time, Draper crosses paths with a human, Friday, who has recently escaped slavery on an alien planet. As the two find a means of communication, they become friends. They soon work together to survive the incredible odds, including an alien attack and meteorological phenomena. Filmed on location in California's Death Valley, this impressive feature owes much to cinematographer Winton C. Hoch and special effects master Lawrence W. Butler.

Edwin F. Zabel is the executive producer of this movie. I have just recently found out this, as I had a family tree project. I don't think this is anything super special, but it's pretty interesting to think about.

I really like this film. Ib Melchoir, who wrote it, really tried to add in hard science/science speculation and it shows. He was given a budget of about $750 by the studio and it shows at times but once Draper gets stuck on Mars it grabs you and holds you - this guy is fighting for his life - he's 40 million miles from the nearest 7-11 but he holds on and eventually pulls through, thanks to a friend from Orion he calls Friday. Draper and Friday - two guys from different planets - work together to stay alive. Maybe there is something to hope for out there, and down here too. Maybe Friday has got it right - "God not forget". So check out Robinson Crusoe on Qua Qua Tanango (Friday's name for Mars) and tip your hat to old Ib because that man was an artist and a visionary. Think what he could have done with a real budget too. Cheers, The Whispering Squash PS Isn't that the Caped Crusader piloting the ship? Holly Adam West Batman!

This is a great movie despite what the title might suggest. It's like Castaway but on another planet. The movie is well written and the pace will keep you involved until the end.

One item that bears note in Robinson Crusoe on Mars is the empathetic relationship between the Astronaut and the slave. Like most people, I saw this movie as a kid on late-night television. More than once, because I'd look for it in "TV GUIDE" (remember that?). The reason for the compulsion was it was the first time I was able to perceive empathy and deeper human emotion in a production, let alone one in the Science Fiction genre. I'll never forget the scene where the slave is holding the oxygen pills and seeing that his Astronaut friend is...well, you can see for yourself. Suffice it to state, it'll become a defining moment of thought with the movie and you'll appreciate the level of direction and screenwriting so far beyond the genre. Kids may enjoy this movie, but bear in mind, it's not a Man vs. Aliens flick. If your kids could handle Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" it's a fair, even paced, family movie.

I remember as a child, waiting for this movie to show up on TV after making its theater rounds. Lot's of TV ad hype surrounded its premier. It was definitely worth the wait, and is still one of my favorites!

I rember this flick when I was a kid and its just as great now saw it at the Stanley Theater on Journal Square on a great afternoon matinee it only got better with time with its simplistic message of taken care of one another and two is better than one

I remember going to a drive-in in the back of my aunt's bat-finned Plymouth as a kid in my pajamas, her backing up over the hump adjacent to the speaker, opening the back door and laying on my pillow to watch this movie. I still get excited not only about the movie, but the memories. It's a classic in the true sense. A must have for everyone with knowledge of "where we were" vs. where we are. An innocent view of Mars at best, but we all were once. So sit back, pop this in, and remember when....

Great movie, seen it as a kid in the theater and just bought it on Itunes. It is when a movie had great plots and the special effects are not so bad for its time either. If you are into old sci fi movies this is one of the best.

This has always been one of my favorite sci fi movies. Paul Mantee turns out a great performance; being very respectful to the sci fi genre. This is not a cheesy movie but a well-acted movie with a good script and believable scenery and effects for its day. Remember, this is from 1964.
