Description

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall ignite the screen in this classic film noir adaptation of Raymond Chandler's steamy detective novel. When private investigator Philip Marlowe (Bogart) accepts the blackmail case of one of Los Angeles' wealthiest men, his probe leads deep into a web of lies, drugs, pornography and murder woven around his client's two beautiful daughters. But Marlowe's most startling discovery is his inexorable attraction to one of the sisters.

Movie would be better if the plot made sense.

Forget the infamously murky plot. Everything else about this movie is top notch. It's funny, snappy, sexy, stylish. One of the best private eye pictures ever, and one of the best Hawks or Bogart or Bacall ever made. She was never sexier. The supporting cast ain't hash either. Elisha Cook Jr. is great, and the somewhat mysterious Sonia Darrin smolders in her uncredited role as Agnes, the brunette with a heart of iron. She struts away with every scene she's in, and as some film buffs have pointed out, her implied love/hate relationship with Bogart is even sexier than his with Bacall. It really makes you wonder why she only made a tiny handful of films. In fact all the women in the film, except the thumbsucking Carmen, are smart and sassy in ways you don't often see in 1940s movies. Great flick I've watched many times.

Classic Bogey and Bacall. You cannot go wrong if you are a fan of Bogart. This movie is all about the banter between Bogart and every actor/actress he encounters. As for the reviewer who could not find "To Have or Have Not" , another Bogey and Bacall classic, look under classic films not film noir. itunes has it available to rent or purchase.

At the ending of this movie you may be very confused on who actually killed who but you will love the suspense and characters enough that you really dont care. The movie is based on the Raymond Chandler book of the same name but much of it was rewritten to give more of the Bogart/Bacall chemistry. If you have enjoyed any of Humphrey Bogart's film noir movies this is one you have to see.

Not sure why iTunes chose not include the other Bogey and Bacall classic, "To Have and Have Not". If they do have it, I can not find it. Key Largo and The Big Sleep are must haves for Bogey fans. For those that enjoy the classic banter between Lauren and Humphrey though, To Have and Have not is a gem. "Just put your lips together and blow". Maybe iTunes will soon include this with these other great films. One great May December relationship that will last for all time.

I absolutely LOVE this movie! It might help that i'm a bit obsessed with Humphrey Bogart but I love how everything is pulled together in this film with the humor and romance and the chemistry between Bogie and Bacall is very strong and more apparent (as they had just been married). Although the stroyline is a little hard to follow with all the names and murders, etc. it is overall a great classic.
