When a small-town girl wins a beauty contest and its prize of a Hollywood screen test, a local gas station attendant appoints himself her protector, chaperones her to Tinseltown and becomes a one-man disaster area on the studio lot in the screwball comedy Free and Easy. Elmer (Keaton) decides it is his mission in life to escort Elvira (Anita Page) and her mother (Trixie Fraganza) to Hollywood. Once there, he also feels it is his duty to defend Elvira from the overtures of Latin-lover film star Larry (Robert Montgomery). But nothing turns out to be what it seems: Larry is really a stand-up guy from Kansas, and the fickle finger of fate brings fame to an unexpected duo.
