This movie had gotten a lot of hate. Understandable since it's very weird, slowly paced and graphic, however it tells a wonderful story of the decay of the american dream and the corruption of the wealthy bankers. It's well acted and has excellent cinematography and music, very underrated movie and one of my top 10 for the year so far

This movie was actually interesting. Wished I'd had the chance to watch it on the big screen. And this is a buy, not a rental. I regret I didn’t buy it, and not just because it’s “Ryan Gosling’s” whatever. It sticks with you, and you think about it long after you watch it. The characters get in your bones. The only thing rotten about this, is the mainstream critics who reviewed it. Something else is going on with that. The movie is NOT TERRIBLE. Only thing I didn’t enjoy had to do with the pacing in places, and thats why I said 4 stars.

This movie was pretty great. The composition was spot on the whole movie, and the plot was pretty good. It's not a thriller it's not an action movie, but tells a good story that keeps you intrigued. Would watch again.

If this directorial debut had been made by an unknown artists, critics would have celebrated it. However, this is Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut and the Entertainment World loves to tear down the artists they help to raise up. While there are flaws, this is bold debut full of creativity and ideas. And, Benoît Debie’s cinematography and the film’s lighting is amazing to watch.

This is one reason why I don't listen to movie critics. From the cinematography to the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, this movie is an amazing piece of work! Loved it so much and it left me with goosebumps! Well done Ryan Gosling!

It's a grotesque and macabre fairytale that unfolds within the gritty landscape of urban decay. Terrific storytelling with solid performances by all involved. I respect others' opinions but in this case the critics might need to broaden their horizons a bit. If you're up for something different...give this a try.

Beautiful, brooding. A quiet intensity. If you’re into Lynch or dark, meandering tension in general, this is a great flick. And it’s certainly better than 90% of the drivel coming out Studios. I really applaud Gosling (and Hendricks, etc) for making an artistic film, not just churning out another conventional cookie cutter story for a quick pay day. I also think it’s bizarre how this film has been slammed by critics, and pretty ironic one of them called this film “derivative”. If it’s derivative, at least it’s derived from other inventive, challenging sources.

Growing up in Detroit in the early 90s, watching its steady and rapid descent, Gosling's message hit me very deeply. Although set in a fictional city, many core elements in the film closely resemble the structure of post decline Detroit, which has sadly accumulated to a crime ridden post apocalyptic wasteland. The film captured the gritty, disturbing reality that many people must face. Although some extremely bizarre and horrific imagery is included, I feel it is needed to (fully portray the message that a place not too dissimilar really does exist. Fortunately, the two young lovers bring some light, showing that beauty can still be found even in the darkest circumstances. There is a bit of disconnect in the storyline and the film leaves you feeling grim, but overall I feel it is a fairly decent debut from Gosling.
