Description

Emmy-nominated comedy Portlandia returns for its highly anticipated sixth season. Starring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Portlandia features sketches that skewer the neuroses and values of liberal indie/intellectual culture. Over the past five seasons, Portlandia has expanded our knowledge of the peculiar characters of America's damp northwest.

  • It’s Just Okay

Doesn’t have the same satirical bite as the earlier seasons; it’s more centered on its characters and further drawn-out story arcs for each episode. Plus, and it’s probably just me, but I find Fred Armisen in drag to be more creepy than funny, so an over abundance of Candace and Nina just spoils it the mood. I’m sure there are plenty of fans who will enjoy this season, but it’s not the same for me.
  • Season 6 is so-so.

I really like Portlandia. I especially like the first three seasons and Season 5's episode on Candace & Toni. However, like the rest of Season 5, Season 6's emphasis on just one or two storylines is rather played and boring and doesn't illustrate the captivating universe of Portland, Oregon that the first few seasons ably reveals to viewers. Unfortunately, Season 6 makes Portland look like any other city (the feminist store episode is a great example). The peripheral characters (non-Armisen and Brownstein) are too normal and similar to people in everyday America in 2016 than the alternative idyllic world of Portland[ia]. Perhaps the director changed (I don't know) but the direction of the show is not as good as it once was.

Portlandia is uniquely quirky, funny, and sweet. I highly recommend it.
