This is an interesting story, with a unique visual style, from teh colorful Argolans to the no-windowed, high walled hive. The whole story seems a referendum on different ways raqces die, from sabotage, to internal strife, to nuclear winter. the pacing is slow, more suited to a book than a TV adventure. K9 would have added much to this story, but JNT made suer he got zapped in teh first scene. Too bad.

This was once again a great story performed by the wonderful fourth doctor (Tom Baker) and his lovely assistant Romana (Lalla Ward). I was very impressed by the amazing storyline. The graphics were good, especially for the time period this episode was filmed in. I would definitely recommend this episode to a friend. I just wish there was more classic doctor who on itunes.

This was the beginning of John Nathan Turner's time at the Doctor Who helm, and from the first over-long tracking shot across Brighton Beach, he doesn't lket you forget it. K9 is done in by seawater in the first five minutes. The Doctor's clothes have inexplicably changed. And the mood seems to have gotten a bit more grim. The entire episode is a rumination, much like the rest of the season leading up to Logopolis, on aging and death. The Argolans are a sterile race who are on their last legs, while the Doctor himself is aged beyond his years (much like what happens to the Tenth in The Sound of Drums). In better hands, this material could have been stellar, but they had to wrap in an unnecessary padding subplot about reptilian mobsters trying to take over the Leisure Hive. This leaves the plot meandering between the scientific and ethical concerns about a dying race, once a race of mighty warriors trying to survive or die with dignity, the tension of a dramatically-aged doctor and the idiocy of guys in big, sub-Godzilla kaijyu suits lumbering about trying to be menacing. In the end, it's good brain candy, but some of the other Baker serials like the Deadly Assassin are much more satisfying on a cerebral level.
